Why Your AC Is Running but Not Cooling the House

Fan running, air coming out, but the house is still warm. Filters, frozen coils, dirty condensers and failed capacitors explained.

Few things are more frustrating on a hot afternoon than hearing the air conditioner running while the house keeps warming up. The good news is that the cause is often simple. The bad news is that running it in that state can turn a small problem into an expensive one.

Here are the usual suspects, what you can check, and when to switch it off and call.

Check the filter and thermostat first

A dirty filter chokes airflow across the indoor coil. Less air means less cooling, and eventually the coil freezes. Swap the filter and make sure the thermostat is set to Cool, with the setpoint below room temperature and the fan on Auto.

Frozen evaporator coil

If you see frost or ice on the copper line at the outdoor unit or near the furnace, the indoor coil is frozen. Low airflow and low refrigerant are the two main reasons.

Turn the AC off and set the fan to On for a few hours to thaw the coil. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor, which is the most expensive part to replace.

Outdoor unit problems

Go outside and look at the condenser. The large fan on top should be spinning and the unit should hum. If the fan is still while the compressor buzzes, a failed capacitor or fan motor is likely. These are common, relatively affordable repairs.

Also look at the fins. Cottonwood fluff, grass clippings and dirt can block airflow so the unit cannot shed heat. Gently hosing from the inside out with power off helps, but bent fins and heavy buildup need professional cleaning.

Refrigerant leaks

An air conditioner is a sealed system. If refrigerant is low, there is a leak. Adding refrigerant without finding the leak means paying for the same problem again. A technician locates the leak, repairs it where practical, then recharges to the manufacturer's specification.

Ductwork and sizing

If one floor stays hot while another is fine, leaky or undersized ducts, closed registers or an undersized system may be to blame. Upstairs rooms naturally run warmer, but a large difference points to an airflow issue worth investigating.

Quick checklist before you call

These checks are safe and take a few minutes.

  • Replace the furnace filter.
  • Confirm the thermostat is on Cool and the batteries are fresh.
  • Check both breakers: the furnace and the outdoor AC disconnect.
  • Look for ice on the lines and switch off if you see any.
  • Clear debris from around the outdoor unit.

Common questions

+Why is my AC blowing warm air?

Common causes are a dirty filter, a frozen coil, a failed outdoor capacitor or fan motor, or low refrigerant from a leak.

+Can I add refrigerant myself?

No. Handling refrigerant requires certification, and topping up without fixing the leak does not solve the problem.

+How long should my AC take to cool the house?

It depends on the day and the house, but it should steadily drop the temperature. If it cannot keep up on a moderate day, something is wrong.

+How often should AC be maintained?

Once a year, ideally in spring before the first heat wave.

+Is a frozen AC an emergency?

Not dangerous, but turn it off to protect the compressor and book a repair.
